I wanted to provide you with an update regarding Theft - (shoplifting, personal, other), which people around your area have highlighted as an issue of concern on the priority survey. A man has been jailed after he stole items worth more than £1,200 from shops in Basingstoke.
Dean Evans, 38, of Charles Richards Close, Basingstoke, stole meat, confectionery and toiletries worth £1,279 in July and August.
He stole the items from One Stop on Shakespeare Road and the Tesco Express stores on Carpenters Down and Oakridge Road.
Officers launched an investigation and arrested Evans in connection with the reports. He was later charged with 15 counts of theft from a shop.
Evans pleaded guilty to all offences and was jailed for a total of 12 weeks at Basingstoke Magistrates Court on Wednesday 2 September.
Basingstoke Inspector Jim Gallimore said: “We know that Dean Evans’ behaviour has had a huge impact on local businesses, staff and the wider community.
“After a shoplifting, businesses have to recover the costs which results in shops typically increasing prices, which has a huge impact on the wider public.
“We take all reports of shoplifting extremely seriously and I hope this result reassures the public that we will do all we can to put offenders before the courts.”
